Prof. Dr. Bert De Foer graduated in Radiology from the University Hospitals Leuven (Prof. Dr. A.L. Baert) in 1995. Since 1997, he has been affiliated with the Department of Radiology at GZA Hospitals Sint-Augustinus, now part of the ZAS (Ziekenhuis aan de Stroom) Hospitals in Antwerp, Belgium, where he specializes in Neuroradiology and Head and Neck Radiology.
He obtained his PhD at the faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium in 2011 with a dissertation entitled “The value of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up of middle ear cholesteatoma.” For this work, he received the Emeritus Prof. Dr. A.L. Baert Scientific Prize in 2012. His research helped establish MRI as a standard technique for the diagnosis and follow-up of middel ear cholesteatoma.
Prof. Dr. De Foer earned the European Board Diploma in Head and Neck Radiology (EBDiHNR, 2013) and the European Diploma in Neuroradiology (EDiNR, 2016). He served as Vice-President (2017–2020) and President (2020–2023) of the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology (ESHNR), during which the society’s membership nearly tripled. In 2024, he was awarded the prestigious ESHNR Gold Medal or life time achievemen award for his scientific work and achievements in Head and Neck Radiology.
He is (co-) author of more than 85 peer-reviewed scientific papers, has contributed numerous book chapters on Head and Neck Radiology, and co-edited the Springer volume “Temporal Bone Imaging” (2015).
His current research as senior author focuses on hydrops MRI in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with Ménière’s disease and related inner ear disorders.

Major achievements:
ESHNR was a very small scientific society (founded 1987) when i came in (~1992).
Special achievements were to strengthen the society by enlarging the amount of members internationally and make the annual meeting much larger and more international (increase the participants from ~100 to ~500).
Also get the first direct connections with ECR/ESR and EJR because of my prominent position in ECR.
I brought in dental imaging as essential part of ESHNR and organized/co- organized several annual meetings (vienna, brugge, washington, estoril, paris, oxford, budapest…).
